How to set up an EDI connection with Walmart through Orderful.
Walmart's EDI connection is a custom AS2 connection set up directly through Walmart's RetailLink portal. Walmart doesn't provide a central EDI helpdesk for third-party providers, so all configuration on Walmart's side happens in RetailLink. Orderful creates a dedicated AS2 channel for your account with a Walmart-specific certificate, then works with you to complete the cutover and document testing.
You don't have to navigate this on your own. Your Orderful representative can schedule a working session at any point in the process to walk through the RetailLink configuration, certificate exchange, or document testing together.
Note: This article also applies to Sam's Club. Sam's Club is a Walmart subsidiary and uses the same RetailLink mailbox. The only difference is the partner ISA: Sam's Club uses 08 / 925485USSM, while Walmart Stores uses 08 / 925485US00. Setup is otherwise identical.
What you need before starting
An active Walmart supplier relationship with RetailLink access. Walmart issues RetailLink credentials when your supplier relationship is approved. If you don't have access, contact your Walmart buyer or your company's RetailLink administrator. Orderful can't request RetailLink access on your behalf.
The team member with RetailLink access available when it's time to configure the AS2 mailbox and complete the cutover. Orderful can schedule a working session and join via screen share if helpful.
Your list of EDI transaction types you plan to trade with Walmart (for example: 850, 856, 810, 855, 860).
How it works
RetailLink AS2 mailbox setup (new partnerships only). For new Walmart partnerships, the team member with RetailLink access opens the B2B app under Apps > B2B > Global Enterprise Mailbox, completes the pre-survey, selects AS2 Setup, and confirms the transaction types you plan to trade. This creates a Walmart-side mailbox for your account. If you're migrating to Orderful from another EDI provider, your mailbox already exists in RetailLink and this step is skipped.
Orderful provides AS2 details. Orderful creates a dedicated AS2 channel for your account with a Walmart-specific certificate and sends you Orderful's AS2 ID, AS2 URL, and certificate file.
Orderful's AS2 details are entered into RetailLink. The Orderful AS2 ID and URL are entered into your RetailLink mailbox under Mailbox Maintenance > EDIINT (AS2).
Certificate exchange. You download the Walmart AS2 certificate from RetailLink and share it with Orderful. Orderful uploads it on our side. The Orderful certificate is uploaded in RetailLink under Certificate Maintenance > Certificate Connectivity.
Connectivity test and cutover. Orderful schedules a working session with your team to confirm connectivity from RetailLink. Once verified, the AS2 connection is active.
Document testing. Each transaction type is tested through RetailLink's Document Testing tool before going live. Orderful coordinates this process with you.
Go live. Once all transaction types pass testing in RetailLink, your Walmart connection is promoted to production.
Migration note: If you're migrating to Orderful from another EDI provider, the RetailLink AS2 connection update should only be applied once you're fully ready to cut over. Once the update is in place, your Walmart EDI traffic will route through Orderful, so applying it before your Orderful configuration and testing are complete will interrupt your existing production flow with your current provider. Your Orderful representative will coordinate the cutover timing with you.
Orderful is available to schedule a call to walk through any phase of this process with you. Let your Orderful representative know if you'd like us to guide you live through any of the RetailLink steps.
Testing
Walmart requires document testing for each transaction type through RetailLink's Document Testing tool before promoting your connection to production. Testing covers both directions:
Documents Walmart sends to you (for example: 850, 860). The test document is downloaded from RetailLink, uploaded to Orderful, and the resulting 997 functional acknowledgment is uploaded back to RetailLink.
Documents you send to Walmart (for example: 856, 810, 855). The document is created in Orderful, sent to Walmart, and the X12 file is uploaded in RetailLink to confirm receipt.
Orderful coordinates this process with you and can schedule a call to walk through testing in RetailLink together if needed.
Known testing quirk: Some Walmart test documents arrive with generic placeholder ISA IDs, or with sender and receiver swapped. Before the document can be processed in Orderful, the ISA IDs need to be updated so that Walmart's ISA is the sender and your ISA is the receiver. Orderful can assist with this step.
Common questions
Why doesn't Orderful contact Walmart directly?
Walmart manages all EDI configuration through RetailLink, and there's no central Walmart EDI helpdesk for third-party providers to email. RetailLink access is restricted to approved Walmart suppliers, which is why your team drives the setup in RetailLink with Orderful's support.
I don't have RetailLink access. What do I do?
Contact your Walmart buyer or your company's existing RetailLink administrator to request access. Orderful can't request RetailLink access on your behalf, and the setup can't be completed without it.
I'm setting up Sam's Club. Is the process different?
No. Sam's Club uses the same RetailLink mailbox as Walmart Stores. The only difference is the partner ISA: 08 / 925485USSM for Sam's Club vs 08 / 925485US00 for Walmart Stores. All other steps are identical.
Can I use one AS2 connection for both Walmart Stores and Sam's Club?
Yes. Because both share the same RetailLink mailbox, your Orderful-side AS2 channel covers both. Transaction types are confirmed separately for each banner during RetailLink setup.
I'm migrating to Orderful from another EDI provider. When should I update the AS2 connection in RetailLink?
Only when you're fully ready to cut over to Orderful. Once the RetailLink update is in place, your Walmart EDI traffic will route to Orderful, so applying it before your Orderful configuration and testing are complete will interrupt your existing production flow. Your Orderful representative will coordinate the cutover timing with you.
How long does setup take?
Most of the timeline depends on how quickly your team can complete the RetailLink configuration and schedule the cutover session. Once both sides have certificates exchanged and connectivity is verified, document testing typically takes a few business days per transaction type.
Can Orderful walk me through the RetailLink steps?
Yes. Your Orderful representative can schedule a working session at any phase of the process to guide you through RetailLink configuration, certificate exchange, or document testing.
Note: After the trade request is submitted, your Orderful representative will coordinate the AS2 channel setup and the cutover with you directly. For questions about your Walmart connection status or to schedule a working session, email [email protected].
